WSJ: U.S. Urges Americans to Leave Burundi After Violence Kills 87
U.S. government asks citizens to leave as soon as possible after violence surrounding disputed third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza
BUJUMBURA, Burundi—The U.S. government has asked its citizens to leave Burundi as soon as possible after 87 people were killed Friday in clashes, an escalation of violence surrounding the disputed third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
The State Department said Sunday it has ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and dependents of U.S. government employees from Burundi.
On Friday, Burundi security forces arrested 45 people after armed men attacked three military installations. Residents said security forces searched houses and dragged people out and shot them, some with their hands tied behind their backs.
