Wall Street Journal: Gunmen Attack Military Sites in Burundi Amid Concerns About Civil War
Gunfire and explosions rock Bujumbura, terrifying civilians
BUJUMBURA, Burundi—Gunmen attacked military installations around this east African nation’s capital city on Friday in the most serious sign yet that opposition to the president’s third term is turning into a full-fledged rebellion.
Government officials said rebels launched dawn raids at military and security force encampments and a prison outside the capital, sparking fighting that left five military personnel and 12 insurgents dead. The assailants were seeking to seize arms and free prisoners, the statement added.
Bursts of gunfire could be heard in parts of the city until the afternoon, according to residents.
