Iran Supreme Leader: 'Assad In Power Is Our Red Line In Syria'

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad meets Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran February 18, 2007.

Reuters: Iran just issued its own ‘red line’ in Syria

A top advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader on Sunday said the future of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad could only be determined by the Syrian people and this was a "red line" for Tehran.

Assad's fate is a sticking point in talks between world powers aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Iran and Russia want him to stay in power until elections are held, while Western and Arab powers say he must go.

Update: Fate of Syria's Assad a 'red line', Iran official says (Al Jazeera)

WNU Editor: Even with these blunt Iranian statements, Western pundits are still optimistic that a way will be found to remove Assad from power .... What Would It Take for Iran to Abandon Assad? (Matthew Mcinnis, Newsweek). As to what is my take .... Iran's mullahs has an annoying habit of sticking to their "red lines", and they probably will stick with Assad regardless of what may happen on the ground.

I take Khamenei's red line more seriously than Obama's red line.

Obama is like the proverbial 90 pound weakling (who gets sand kicked in his face), but who has huge body guards. Instead of hitting the gym seriously or telling his bodyguards to take care of business, he tells his body guards to stand down.

I have more faith in Hollande than Obama and Hollande might be in the same league as Napoleon Bonaparte III.
