U.S. Navy's Newest Ship Is Towed To Base After Breaking Down At Sea

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: USS Milwaukee breaks down at sea

The littoral combat ship USS Milwaukee, the Navy's newest ship that was commissioned in Milwaukee in November, broke down at sea Friday and had to be towed more than 40 nautical miles to a base in Little Creek, Va., the Navy Times reported.

The ship, constructed at the Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard in Marinette, suffered an engineering problem while in route from Halifax, Canada, to Mayport, Fla., and ultimately its home port of San Diego, according to a post on the Navy Times website.

The cause of the problem on the ship — which was towed to the Joint Expeditionary Base at Little Creek, Va. — is being evaluated by the ship's crew and technical consultants, according to the Times.

Just wild guess but I bet the propulsion system broke down from the side loads of the waves while cruising at high speed.

In a glassy sea, it would have held.

When planes approached the sonic barrier back in the day they had wing flutter. Wings fell off before they figured it out.

These props are having such problems.

I would bet that most any engineer get the normal loads even under high speed.

The vibration and the side loads must be worse than they had seen before.

Anzino,

According to the Navy releases, the problems are a continual accumulation of metal shards and shavings in the transmission and final drive filters.

"Initial indications are that fine metal debris collected in the lube oil filter caused the system to shut down, according to a Navy statement provided to Navy Times. The cause of the metal debris in the lube oil system is not known and assessments are ongoing."
