AFP: Saudi-Iran crisis a rebuke for US policy in region

Washington (AFP) - The dramatic escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran has dealt a major blow to US standing in the region, and some experts say the blame lies with its single-minded focus on mending relations with Tehran.

Washington has failed to manage its traditional Sunni Arab allies in the Gulf while reaching out to their Shiite foe Iran to secure a nuclear deal, experts say.

Secretary of State John Kerry called his Iranian and Saudi counterparts, foreign ministers Mohammad Javad Zarif and Adel al-Jubeir, on Monday to urge calm.

But the crisis that erupted when Riyadh marked the New Year by executing a respected Shiite cleric was always likely to come to a head, whatever event triggered it.

WNU Editor,

Saudi actions have guaranteed a Hard Liner winning the Iranian elections,

If the KSA isn't carefull they will be facing a four front war, Yemen to the east, Syria to the north east, Iraq to the north and Iran to the west.

further proof that the Obama admin's nuclear deal was a tipping point of disaster....

The 5+1 deal changed nothing in the ME,

China, Russia and Europe were going to lift the sanctions on Iran anyway.

What did change the balance of power in the ME was Bush's invasion and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which, under "previous management", were enemies of Iran.

Anzino,

As we know by now, with perfect hindsight, you can pretty much believe the public statements of almost any other Government's Officials, ( except the NORKs), over those of the US.
