Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko speaks during a news conference in Kyiv on January 14.
Radio Free Europe: Poroshenko: Ukraine To Restore Control Over East This Year
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has vowed to regain sovereignty over the country’s separatist east in 2016.
"Ukrainian sovereignty over the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions must be restored," Poroshenko told journalists on January 14.
He added that securing Crimea's return from Russian control was the priority, saying "de-occupation" of the peninsula that was annexed by Russia in March 2014 must be implemented via international mechanisms and with EU and U.S. help.
"We -- the society, the army, the government -- have largely strengthened our country's defense," the Ukrainian leader also said. "This is reflected by the fact that our enemy is losing its willingness to continue its offensive against Ukraine."

Imagine if Guantanamo Bay was the US's only Atlantic Naval port...How far would the US go to maintain control of that port?
That is what Sevastopol is to Russia; its only year round warm water port with access to both the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Russia nearly lost that port a decade ago and there is no way Russia will abandon that port (to NATO) without a fight.
I certainly hope Poroshenko isn't as stupid as he sounds. Returning Crimea to Ukraine will take an army far larger than anything Ukraine can produce on their own.
No way Russia is going to give up Crimea.not going to happen.
For Ukraine to get Crimea back at any time in the foreseeable future, is about as likely as me winning the lottery. While winning the lottery would be optimal, it would be unwise to stake one's financial future on winning the lottery. It is lijewise unwise for the Ukrainan leadership to pursue policies such as this that are unrealistic.
America for its part should support Russia's position on Ukraine and should act in word and deed to oppose and undermine sanctikns against Russia. While I'm under no delusion that EU nations would change course, such a policy change on our part may help our relations with Russia.
Russia is the most powerful country in the world. It's unwise to pursue pllicies tgat risk animosity with more poeerful nations and individuals. Furthermore we need Russian help to deal with Iran. To get this help, it would seem a good idea to work on imoroving our relations with them.
Yeah, and I want a threesome with Victoria Secret models!
The Ukraine will eventually get the Crimea back, peacefully. There is no legal means for the Russians to keep it. They will gnash their teeth for a few years but it is inevitable the Crimea goes back to its rightful owners.
In regards to the Russians thinks the Ukraines leader's popularity is lower than whale turds, lol..its Sputnik dude.
It's a Novin 24 Poll, a Ukrainian Nationalist TV Network, dude,
