Wall Street Journal: Kerry Adamant on Syria Peace Talks Amid Opposition Jitters
In Riyadh, U.S. secretary of state says understanding has been reached despite hesitation by Saudi-backed opposition
RIYADH—Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday the latest United Nations-brokered Syria peace talks would go ahead, even as world powers remained divided over who will represent the country’s fractious opposition.
“We reached an understanding on how to begin this first round of negotiations,” he said at a news conference in Riyadh with Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir, part of a diplomatic tour to ensure the talks begin amid hesitation by the Saudi-backed opposition.
The two said they had paved the way for a “proximity meeting” in Geneva, meaning simultaneous but not direct consultations between opposition and regime representatives.
