Reuters: Special U.S. targeting force 'now in place' in Iraq: U.S.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new U.S. force of special operations troops has arrived in Iraq and is preparing to work with Iraqi forces to go after Islamic State targets, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Wednesday.
Carter disclosed the deployment in a broad speech to U.S. soldiers that sought to underscore American efforts to accelerate the campaign against Islamic State, both in Iraq and Syria.
"The specialized expeditionary targeting force I announced in December is now in place and is preparing to work with the Iraqis to begin going after ISIL's fighters and commanders," Carter said at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
WNU Editor: This new U.S. force of special operations troops sounds like a hit squad whose sole purpose is to find and track Islamic State leaders for elimination.

Sending these special ops guys, who probably know next to nothing about Arabs or their language, out into the hinterlands to find ISIS commanders and assassinate them doesn't sound wise to me. Imagine if one or more of them gets caught.

Most of these "special ops guys" have probably already deployed to Iraq several times in the past. They know Iraq well. U.S. special ops honed their skills in Iraq and Afghanistan, and if allowed to operate freely they will wreak havoc. I would not want to be an ISIS leader if delta was around
Agree 110% :)
Less than 1% of US SOF ranks are of Middle Eastern origin,
SOF ranks in Afghanistan and Iraq were fleshed out with local "interpreters", but those numbers have dropped significantly as the Republican Party has stalled many measures to allow Afghan and Iraqi US Military interpreters and their families asylum in the US.
By the CENTCOM count, the US has killed 9,846 #1, #2 and # 3 aQ Commanders and during that same time frame, aQ has grown from less than 200 people scattered in cells through out 4 countries, to well over 35,000 fighters holding at least 9 "caliphinates" and dozens of cities.
As the R+6, Peshmurga, YPG and Iraqi and Popular Forces Campaigns show, unless you can take, clear and hold local ground with local forces, you are wasteing time, money and lives.
If you can instill terror in their ranks with hunter killer teams you are not wasting time you are severely hindering their ability for c&c and lowering moral and most likley encouraging more desertions.

ISIS seems fully capable of instilling terror in their own ranks to offset any outside sources. Burning the men alive who have retreated must have a terrific impact on the rest of the guys. That their army just doesn't desert is probably because they have nowhere to go.
