USA Today: Western Balkans countries close borders to migrants
Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia closed their borders to illegal migrants Wednesday, with Serbia expected to follow suit, according to media reports.
The western Balkans route is the main route taken by migrants heading from Greece to northern Europe.
The European Union announced its intention to close the route ahead of a meeting of leaders this week. European Council President Donald Tusk said 880,000 migrants entered it in 2015 and 128,000 in the first two months of this year.
On Wednesday, Tusk tweeted: "Irregular flows of migrants along Western Balkans route have come to an end."
