Because the US knows that Iran is on to them, a lesson learned half a century ago, and that some significant restitution is owed.

I wonder if they cracked their iPhone encryption.

I wonder why they got anything at all? Why didn't they at least drop sensitive systems overboard, let alone the rest of the equipment which could give up information, prior to surrendering?

Restitution could well be owed by Iran to the US. This is going to need a fair trial where all evidence is analyzed objectively. Unfortunately given the current geo political environment there's simply no way the US or its leadership can expect a fair trial here. At this point any tribunal would simply be a kangaroo court deciding in Iran's favor no matter what the evidence may be.

Even if a fair trial can be achieved should the tribunal decide in America's favor in some fashion how does the United States collect? In other words there needs to be some mechanism in place to ensure Iranian compliance with any ruling. Right now there isn't.

Some type of settlement that may or may not involve the exchange of money or some other consideration is likely expected at some point, however, as part of the settlement it would be reasonable for the American side to expect Iran to abandon it's goal of "death to America." Furthermore it would be unreasonable to expect America to make any more concessions to Iran while they still harbor the goal of death to America as it only puts Iran in a better position to carry out the goal of death to America.

Also, Iran is aiming at "death to Israel" as well. Israel is America's most important and reliable ally. It would be unreasonable to grant "significant restitution" to Iran while Iran retains such goals as such actions would only embolden them and make them in a better position to implement these goals. At the very least, Israel should have a say in this.

According to some reports the US role in Iran a half century ago may have been exaggerated and/or the US was battling against a significant threat to its just interests. Again, a tribunal of some type is warranted in this area unfortunately the current geo political/media environment makes this impossible right now as the whole process would simply be a show trial to benefit Iran and there's currently no way for the American side to collect on any judgment should the court decide in its favor in some fashion.

If some type of restitution substantial or otherwise is as a result of a just and fair settlement that ends the conflict, America would be prepared to accept this. The key is an equitable trial that reaches an equitable conclusion where all parties involved can trust the process. Right now this simply is not the case and America and its leadership would be unwise in the extreme to willingly submit themselves to it.

"restitution could be well owed by Iran to the US",

Only if they keep the Devices.

Iran can poke around to their hearts content, ( it helps that the secure passwords were probably "password"), even take them apart, and just return the pieces, like the US/Japan did with a Mig-25 back in the Cold War.

Mossadegh owes restitution.

The "devices" may well exonerate the US in this case. If the devices help Iran's case, they will selectively leak what's on them and a compliant world and much of the US media will go along. If the devices don't help Iran's case, then they may well keep them. After all I don't think they want to allowing anything that would undermine their case to get out.

I do hope someone is smart enough not to use "password" as the secure password. I'm sure the Iranians would have had help from the Russians on this one who seem to be the best cyber warriors in the world. At this point, I'm not sure if we even know what they have. We have Iran's word on this but that seems to be about it.

I'm not familiar with the Mig-25 nor am I certain it is even relevant here as each situation is unique. During Cold War I the Soviet Union had the strongest military on earth, as Russia does during Cold War II. As such, it would make sense to want to glean everything one could from a captured Mig-25. Also, there's no way to be certain that Iran would not alter the content on these devices to fit their narrative.

Thats a lot of porn

Did you ever consider that misleading information was purposefully left on board? The whole story about two ships having issues and entering Iranian space ... bit far stretched.. and then not throw it over board...wouldn't that be basic training? But then again, maybe this was all about porn ;)

Yes another way to plant a bug is to just deliver it to them. But then they could have planted a bug on the sailors they returned.

If there is porn on those Computers and other devices:

A) the Iranians can seize them, ( porn's illegal in Iran)

B) the Sailors are in trouble because that's Government property.
