Alphanumeric jumbles like AIM-9X may seem like gibberish or backronyms, but they actually pack in a ton of valuable information.
The U.S. military's rockets and missiles and drones have their popular names that you're familiar with—the Sidewinder, the Minuteman III, Trident II, etc. But their alphanumeric designations (AIM-9, LGM-30G, UGM-133A, respectively), are a little harder to wrap your head or your tongue around. They might seem utterly impenetrable, but they're actually easy to read understand once you know the trick, and they contain way more information than you might think.
