Peter Van Buren, Reuters: World War Three may have already begun in Iraq and Syria
The recent death of a Marine in Iraq exposed the fact the United States set up a firebase there, which in turn exposed the fact the Pentagon misrepresented the number of American personnel in Iraq by as many as 2,000. It appears a second firebase exists, set up on the grounds of one of America’s largest installations in the last Iraq war. Special operations forces range across the landscape. The Pentagon is planning for even more troops. There can be no more wordplay: America now has boots on the ground in Iraq.
The regional picture is dismal. In Syria, militias backed by the Central Intelligence Agency are fighting those backed by the Pentagon. British, Jordanian and American special forces are fighting various enemies in Libya, which, as a failed state, is little more than a nascent Iraq likely to metastasize in its neighbors.

Did WW1 begin in 1914 or 1912 in the Balkans?
Inquiring minds want to know.
1914,
Fuck Siri, Cortana or Alexa, I want Jay on my next phone...
Who else can serve you up instantly Wikipedia links or do a Google search and vomit back the links for you, quicker than anyone else??!!
From yet another anon, I triple that :)
At what point does an acorn become an oak tree?
Technical moments of declaration are merely a temporal fixation; the seeds of conflict are planted years in advance.
The question isn't if WWIII has begun; its whether or not the crop sewn over the last twenty years will be bountiful...
There are baby conflicts sprouting in every corner of our planet, each having the ability to grow quickly out of control, and each likely to pit the Great Powers against one another.
Did Principe just kill the Arch-Duke? Has Italy just begun to bomb Ethiopia? Are Brown Shirts causing problems at political rallies? At what point did we call those actions seeds of conflict? Are we even going to know that WWIII has started before it is over?
The Cold War may have ended, but rivalries persist. World War is something that cannot be written off as too many seem so eager to do.
It is more of an evolution/transition sort of thing. Maybe we should be talking of inflection points. Austria and Russia had been jockeying a long time in the Balkans.
Britain had been jockeying over the Balkans and the Balkans, Middle East & Central Asia since at least 1856.
Germany gave the Austrian Hungarian Empire the "blank cheque", in 1914.
Prior to that, there was no "common cause", both Nations were fixed on different enemies and different goals.
