Reuters: Iranian commandos deployed to Syria as advisers: officer

Iran has sent commandos to Syria as advisers, a military official said on Monday, suggesting it is using its army as well as paramilitary forces to help President Bashar al-Assad's forces in the country's civil war.

Tehran is Assad's main regional ally and has provided military and economic support to his fight against rebel groups and Islamic State militants.

"We are sending commandos from army's Brigade 65 and other units to Syria as advisers," General Ali Arasteh, deputy chief liaison of the army's ground force, was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.

West has never fought them so they may well prove to be elite.
Israel found hezzbollah to be 3lite when they fought them 5o a standstill.

Given the incredibly restrictive rules of engagement the Israelis fought under that were/are even more ridiculous than the ones America fights under, I'm surprised it was a "standstill." I'd have expected Hezbollah to have done much better than that especially with Iran and ultimately Russia backing them.

Remove the restrictions on Israel and I don't it's fought to a standstill. Hezbollah would likely face comlete anniahaltion very quickly. Of course we cannot "know" what would happen until such a fight without those restrictions on the Israelis actually takes place.

The only restrictions the IDF and the IAF faced in the last Lebanon War, was they were not allowed to use nuclear weapons.

All civillian targets were on the table, along with the Lebanese Army, UN Observer Posts, refugee camps, hospitals, orphanages, rest homes for the elderly and soup kitchens.

As the Isreali aftermath reports and inquiries, ( which cost many Politicians, Generals and Intelligence Difectors their jobs, careers and reputations),

Israel had zero idea of Hezboallah strength, defenses, tactics and strategy, before launching operations,

And that an Army spending a decade of it's time focused on killing unarmed Palestinian men, women and children in an illegal opwerstions tends to degrade that so called Army's ability to actually fight a real war.

The "fun" part for the next "go round", and there will be one because the Isreali's are racist morons, is that in Syria, several Hezboallah Brigaides have been equipted with armour, artillary, drones, trained FAC's and have not only been trained in combined arms offensive operations, but have been hardened in battle.

The IRIs military history consists of a 10 year stalemate against Iraq , in which they had to resort to human waves. And empty threats against the 'Zionists' and 'Great Satan'.

So-called 'elite' Hezbollah have been in Syria for several years now, but the Iranians are still using human waves just like in Iraq.

Dream on.

It helps to read actual history. Iran's "allies" in the Iran Iraq war were Syria, North Korea, the KDP and the PDK, none of which could provide much aid because Iran was under a US/Allied Naval blockaide from day 1 of the War.

Iraq had the Soviet Union, the United States, Quatar, the United Kingdom, Afrance , Quatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Romania and the UAE as allies, which ensured that Iraq never lacked for tanks, artillary, small arms, aircraft and missiles, naval vessels, money, oil exports, chemilcal weapons or satellite and other intelligence information on where "best" to use them, ( yup, the US helped Saddam gas the Kurds),

Iran fought Iraq to a draw, and in fact, once the Iraqi's initial offensives failed, Iraq spent the rest of the war on the defensive.

You probably didn't notice, but the IRGC trained Shia Militia's took Ramadi, ( with only a few million dollars in aid and armed) while the US trained $720 billion dollar Iraqi Army ran away from the fight.

Suck it ip, buttercup.

Yes, Iraq spent six years defending, what does that say about Iranian offensives given the massive terrain disparity in between both countries. The war was nevertheless a stalemate as both sides failed to achieve their objectives.

Secondly, unlike the battle to retake Tikrit in which the Soleimani-led Shias refused US air support so they could rush in with their usual human waves, at Ramadi most of the anti-ISIS fighters were either Iraqi military or Sunni tribesmen. And they only attacked after the Kurds cut Ramadi off by taking Sinjar. "IRGC trained" is a fancy word to describe how various Shia factions (Iraqis, Hazaras, Houthis) are turned into cannon fodder for the Islamic Revolution.

Jay,

Israel faced extreme restrictions that go even beyond the ridiculous ones placed on the US military. Most importantly the operation was not allowed to continue long enough. To defeat an enemy as strong as Hezbollah was going to take a minimum of six months if everything went perfectly. Israel probably thought it had support from people that turned out not to materialize.

Given that the enemy uses the areas you mentioned as staging areas for troops and human shields, it would seem reasonable to have the option of targeting these areas. After all Israel's enemies have no such restrictions on targeting and they have a vast network of international support that Israel lacks.

I'm sure it's disheartening for the generals and others whose careers were ruined when the operation never had the resources allocated to it to give it a reasonable chance of something other than a "standstill." As stated, given the situation I'm amazed Israel managed to fight to a "standstill" as opposed to complete and total defeat, a true credit to the skills of the IDF. Now with these generals gone, it may be harder for them on the next "go round." After all Israel is just trying to survive against an array of very powerful enemies, how dare those "racists morons" do that!! I wouldn't expect them to just sit around and wait for the enemies to destroy them.

You make it sound as though the Palestinians are weak. They are not. Not only this but they can count on a vast array of unconditional support from numerous areas including many in the United States. In contrast, the support Israel receives from America is highly conditional in nature and in many cases actually counterproductive to the mid to long range survival of Israel. It really does seem sometimes as though the anti-Israel messaging today is not dissimilar to the anti-Jewish messages in the lead up to WWII.

Suck it up buttercup.

Israel deliberately killed over 8,600 civillians, 48 UN Peacekeepers, 297 Lebanenese Military, hundreds of miles away from the area of ground combat,

And managed to pull off a 1:1 ratio against Hezboallah, with 0 ground seized and held, and had to go running back home with their tail between their legs.

Like the US Military, the IDF and IAF has become a force, only capable of slaughtering civillians, killing natives armed only with sharp fruit, and giving millions of dollars, weapons and manpads to radical Whabbist Islamic Jihadist Head Chopping Goat Fucking Terrorists world wide.
