Wall Street Journal: EU, Macedonia Political Crisis Talks Canceled

Delay in solving political tensions could destabilize Balkan nation

BRUSSELS—A European Union-led mediation effort to end Macedonia’s political crisis was canceled on Thursday, threatening a further round of protests and political infighting that EU officials have warned could destabilize the country.

The EU had invited the leaders of Macedonia’s four main government and opposition parties to a meeting in Vienna on Friday to seek a way out of the latest political tensions. The stalemate began last week when President Gjorge Ivanov pardoned dozens of leading politicians accused of fraud and corruption, sparking large protests.

Zoran Zaev, the leader of the main opposition Social Democrats had conditioned his participation in the Vienna talks on the presidential pardon being scrapped.
