The Telegraph: Aircraft carrier visit by Pentagon chief Ash Carter unleashes storm in South China Sea

A visit by the US defence chief to one of his country’s aircraft carriers is normally a routine part of the job, but not when it is sailing through the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

The US is taking an increasingly assertive stance in the face of China’s aggressive bid to claim virtually the entire waters off its southern coast in the face of competing claims several other South East Asian states.

Even before Ash Carter, the defence secretary, stepped off a helicopter onto the deck of the USS John C Stennis, on Friday afternoon, Beijing was already expressing its anger with new American operations in the region.
