The US Navy says it has seized a weapons shipment in the Arabian Sea from Iran likely heading to war-torn Yemen.

The USS Sirocco intercepted and seized the shipment of weapons hidden aboard a small dhow last week.A statement confirmed that the dhow's crew were released after sailors confiscated the arms.

The Navy said the shipment included 1,500 Kalashnikov assault rifles, 200 rocket-propelled grenade launchers and 21 .50-caliber machine guns.

Anon,

For everyone we stop, dozens are getting through. In fact, the "cheap weapons" as you call them may have been bait to provide a destraction while the more potent stuff gets through. Very respectfully I would off on gloating.

The Small Arms Survey noted in 2010, that while Yemen had roughly 20 million people, Yemen also had over 80 million guns ( mostly AK's and AKM's) , over 2 million RPG's and MANPADS and over 70 billion tons of ammo.

Why would any Yemeni want a rat bag, used AK, when they have a 5 year old AKM, or an RPG-3, when they are up to their eyeballs in RPG-29's and Kornet missile systems?

Past dhow shipments of "antiques" have always wound up going to South Sudan via Somalia.
