CNN: Kerry makes surprise visit to Afghanistan amid security woes
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Secretary of State John Kerry made a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Saturday for key meetings with leaders amid political infighting and a sharp deterioration in security across the country.
The nation's top diplomat is looking to shore up the unity government that he helped bring together nearly two years ago, as well as build momentum for elusive peace talks with the Taliban.
While in Kabul, Kerry will co-host the U.S.-Afghanistan Bilateral Commission with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani. Their third annual meeting will review progress in security, democracy and development outlined in the Strategic Partnership Agreement the two countries signed in 2012.
