USA Today: Yemen cease-fire begins ahead of crucial talks

Sporadic gunfire, explosions and accusations greeted the first day of a U.N.-brokered cease-fire agreement Monday in war-weary Yemen.

The Associated Press described the cease-fire as "mostly holding," but both sides accused the other of breaches. The cease-fire is a precursor to peace talks, scheduled to begin next week in Kuwait, aimed at ending a brutal humanitarian crisis in one of the world's poorest countries.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi blamed Iran-backed Houthi militias for violent clashes Monday in the southwestern city of Taiz, which for months has been under siege from Houthi rebels, Saudi Arabia's Al Arabiya News Channel reported.
