Reuters: Panama Papers probes opened, China limits access to news on leaks

Authorities across the globe have opened investigations into the activities of the world's rich and powerful after a cache of leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm showed possible wrongdoing using offshore company structures.

The "Panama Papers" have cast light on the financial arrangements of high profile politicians and public figures and the companies and financial institutions they use for such activities. Among those named in the documents are friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin and relatives of the leaders of China, Britain, Iceland and Pakistan, and the president of Ukraine.

When the US negotiated with UBS over its punishment for some fraudulent activity part of the deal was to have UBS provide confidential information on its US depositors in Switzerland. To be fair to the US citizens, and probably to reduce detective work, they gave those who had foreign shore accounts with UBS the opportunity of voluntarily coming forward and re-filing previous tax returns that "may" have contained "errors".

Tax accountants and lawyers were swamped at that time with requests to have previous returns amended and refiled. I imagine the US information was held back from the Panama Papers to enable similar accommodations.

I assume the middle man involved in the investigation is not the only entity doing such work and that there is much more scrambling going on behind the scenes.

This raises the question of what is all this money funding and what the repercussions will be if the money, related to tax fraud and other criminal activities, is repatriated back to wherever it came from.
