The Independent: Edward Snowden warns CIA ‘never destroys something by mistake’

Former NSA contractor responds to reports inspector general's office destroyed their only copy of a 6,700 page report on advanced interrogation techniques

Edward Snowden has responded to reports the CIA inspector general’s office “mistakenly” destroyed its only copy of a comprehensive Senate 'torture report' with a stinging rebuttal: “When the CIA destroys something, it's never a mistake.”

An intelligence agency was quoted by Yahoo News as saying CIA inspector general officials deleted an uploaded computer file containing the report, before "inadvertently" destroying a disk with the document on it.

Very respectfully I'm not sure what his "point" is. Anyone who handles highly sensitive information is going to have a plan in place for emergency destruction and to do it very quickly. For example, I'm sure the US has plans in place to destroy all paper and computer files very quickly when the embassy in the green zone in Iraq is overrun. Surely they do.

The fact that Mr. Snowden may or may not have written the plan for Geneva hardly makes him special. Such pans would be experiential common sense, sort of like making sure the gas tank is full before taking a long trip. It seems Mr. Snowden has a higher opinion of himself than would seem to be warranted. This inflated opinion he has of himself is only reinforced by his adoring followers who swallow everything he says without any skepticism or questioning anything he says. It as though the man is a cult leader!!

Anyone can destroy a computer or paper file by mistake. To suggest that it is "never" a mistake is to suggest that the CIA and its personnel are superhuman. Of course to do so makes it much easier to vilify an enemy.

In actuality the CIA is staffed by a combination of incompetent boobs, political hacks, and personnel who have elements of both. Since anyone can destroy files by mistake and these people are less competent than average, it's easy to see how the file was destroyed by mistake. As such, the statement that the file was destroyed by mistake is likely correct. After all given the level of incompetence that exists in this organization it would be much more likely they would do this by mistake than average.

With that said, if this file contained information about overseas prisons for enemies of the United States, its not hard to understand why someone would want this file to destroyed if it were in danger of being obtained by unscrupulous elements. These people took enormous risks at enormous costs to help us and to expose for political purposes would be unconscionable. Assuming anyone still does trust us that would effectively end any and all trust of us.

To eliminate these sources of cooperation really would make us completely blind, deaf, and dumb with regards to foreign threats. Perhaps this is what some people and Mr. Snowden may be included really want this.
