The Next Pearl Harbor Could Happen In Space
Jonathan Broder, Newsweek: Why The Next Pearl Harbor Could Happen In Space
In their techno-thriller Ghost Fleet, authors Peter Singer and August Cole describe a cataclysmic world war that begins with a Chinese sneak attack against the U.S. in space. First, soldiers at China’s Cyber Command Headquarters in Shanghai hack into the Pentagon’s network of GPS satellites and scramble their signals. The cyberattack sows chaos among U.S. forces, which can no longer navigate accurately, track targets or hit them with precision munitions.
Then, from a space station orbiting 200 miles above Earth, Chinese astronauts train a laser gun on three dozen U.S. satellites the military relies upon for virtually all of its communications and critical surveillance. By the time the Chinese are done, America’s technological edge on this new, 21st-century battlefield has been reduced to the predigital levels of World War II.

The US started Space Warfare back in the early '90's in violation of the UN Treaties, and still maintains an expansive lead. Same with Cyberwar.
The US has "surgical scalpels, Russia and China have clubs.
In reality, a US/ China war will start with ASM-135 ASAT's dropping Chinese Satellites like flies, the X-31 will rain "Rods from God" on Chinese Military Command and Control sites, Government offices, water and sewage treatment plants, while Suxnet 3.0, Duqu 2.1, and Flame 1.5 cripple China's communications nets, cause nuclear reactors to overload, cripple China's industries and take down the entire power grid, causing massive floods on the Yellow, Red and Yangeze Rivers.
In the initial strikes, millions of Chinese will die.
The second wave of strikes with be B1, B2 and Cruise Missile strikes against the Chinese ADAD islands in the South China Sea,
Followed by Shock and Awe 2.0 strikes against the Chinese Mainland by everything left in the US long range strike arsenal, in which millions more Chinese will die.
Unable to force the South China Sea, unable to topple the CCP, unable to establish a foothold, the war will settle down into a War of Attrition, while the Global Economy Collapses.
Unable to force a decisive Military Victory, unable to maintain losses in the War of Attrittion, ( hollowed out Industrial base, collapse of the Dollar Economy, 0 savings), President Trump will attempt to dictate Peace Terms, and despite threats to "go Nuclear", China will reject any and all peace terms.
Exhausted, it's economy spent, President Hillary will withdraw US Forces world wide back home for the defence of the Homeland, ( while rounding up and emprisoning 22 million Chinese Americans, about 12 million Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamse, Mongetards, Indonesians, Phillipino's, Thai, and Hmong "by accident".
A stalemated "Not Peace, Not War" similar to Korea will develop, with decades long periods of flashpoints and minor clashes, until a resurgent China, takes the war to American waters and American shores.
Well, in case of a so big attack on US satellite and communications, the pentagon will understand quickly what are the consequences. The next step done from US will be a completely inaccurate but deadly (for the material) strike of dozen of EMP over China. I know military equipment are tested for that, but none of them will resist with a dozen of EMP waves. No comment for the civil equipment's.
Bottom line: the war will be over pretty quickly with 1.3 billions death after one year.
Big EMP's have a nuclear core.
All Nuclear nations currently consider a nuclear powered EMP to be a nuclear strike.
The current US non-nuclear EMP's can take out a cellphone tower, not a city.
You are right, but war is war and correctness has no room in this case.
The response, by any Nuclear nation to a nuclear EMP strike, is full nuclear retaliation.
140 megatons hitting the US, roughly 210 500,000 dead.
The US response will probably be 890 megatons hitting China, with roughly 850,000,000 million dead, with a first strike against Russia, of about 450 megatons, roughly 60,000,000 dead,
Followed by French, British, Russian, Indian and Pakistani strikes, with about another 240,000,000 dead.
Ten years later, everybody in the northern hemishere is dead, ten years after that, everybody in the southern hemisphere, except for a hand full of researchers at the South Pole, who hang on for a few more years.
China's not going to start a war, 2016 Q1 GDP growth was 4.7%, the US's was 0.71%. 2015 GDP growth for China was 6.71%, for the US, 1.1%.
In ten years, China's going to be the entire G20.
Jay .... I thought I was the pessimistic one.
:)
The Old Cold War, in Western Media and Politics, was most often treated as a formal Chess Match, with some moves hidden from the audience, a quiet sober hush on the crowd, the fear and tension palpable, as the move of a pawn by either side, could result in either a block, or global nuclear annihilation.
In the West, the New Cold War is being played out like an old WWF match, with the audience, the Press and the Politicians screaming at the ring, yelling to "choke him out", "use the top rope", "hit him with the piledriver", and trying to pass one of the wrestlers one of those handy, folded chairs,......
It's not going to end well.
It's actually frightening as the ring screaming spills over into the general public. A very large number of people buy into the simplistic narratives generated by the politicians and media.
Today, there is not even the anti war and anti globalization movements (such as they were) to generate mass protest. As you mentioned, state repression played a role here.
The repression these days still exists on the state level but is more and more evident on the civil level. Most political discussion, especially around international affairs, "on the street" is conducted on an absurd and infantile level. Opinions or questions about the big narratives born out of critical thinking are greeted with reptillian illuminati conspiracy theories, outright hostilty, or blank stares followed up with estrangement (he/she is "a buzzkill" or "crazy").
An uninformed, disconnected, and/or thoroughly indoctrinated citizenry is a sure a path to the scenario(s) you lay out as any rotten politicians or "journalists". Indeed one feeds off the other.
We live in dangerous times.
"So, there was an article in today's New York Times about Ben Rhodes, one of President Obama's foreign policy advisers. It's caused quite a bit of chatter in the media for a lot of reasons but this quote from Rhodes in particular
“All these newspapers used to have foreign bureaus,” he said. “Now they don’t. They call us to explain to them what’s happening in Moscow and Cairo. Most of the outlets are reporting on world events from Washington. The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.”
You can imagine how well that's gone over with the press. "

Then, you've got Ann Bernard, ( who speaks no ME Languages) "reporting" on Syria, from the safety of Beruit, which mostly consists on repeating FSA twitter feeds, agit-prop and claims,
Which are written and disseminated to the FSA by British Intelligence operations in Turkey.
