The US Is Dropping Calls For Syrian President Assad To Go

Robert Fisk, The Independent: The US is dropping calls for Assad to go because the Syrian regime is a better bet than Isis

In Syria and Lebanon there are no plans for a future, but the Syrian army is going to have a role in any New Syria.

I’m getting a bit tired of reading about the “US-backed alliance of Syrian militias” and their advance against Isis. The ‘alliance’ is largely Kurdish – which is why, I suppose, the Americans talked about northern Syria when they announced the visit of General Joseph Votel, the head of US Central Command, to the little Kurdish enclave.

General Votel could only set foot in the tiny strip of territory along the Turkish border partly held by Kurdish and a sprinkling of Turkmen groups. A visit to northern Syria by an American general is thus a lot less impressive than it sounds.

WNU Editor: Considering the alternatives .... the U.S. is facing the obvious. But Turkey (apparently) is still sticking to regime change .... Al-Nusra Front in Syria gets daily weapons supplies from Turkey - Russian military (RT).

If anyone thinks Assad and/or the Baath or SAA are going anywhere they are on crack. Look at the state of the country. Cities smashed. Apocalyptic scenes throughout the land. From day one this was going to be a fight to the finish.

And yes, James there has been a steady improvement in the SAA kit. Besides the well publized tanks, artillery etc., I've noticed more uniformity in the uniforms, new rifles, improved recon and SIGNINT abilities. The hardening of SAA cadres continues while tactics, even with setbacks, improve across the board.

Whether anyone likes it or not, Assad and the Baath are the legitimate government of the Syrian Arab Republic. I would be hard put to find an example of a government (certainly not Canada's!!!) and army with the resolve to defend the country we see displayed by that of Assad and the SAA - and their allies.

It's all the more reason why they are despised by "the west" who figured they'd use them and then discard them as they have so many others (et Noriega, Hussien). One doesn't have to like Assad to admire his leadership and the SAA. No one in the shyster infested governments of "the west" even compares.
