Annalisa Merelli, Quartz: Half a billion of our children are growing up in war, famine and other catastrophes

An estimated 462 million children of school age live in countries affected by humanitarian crises—including war, famine, and deadly epidemics—a UNICEF report published on May 4 found.

It’s an astonishing number, nearly one and a half times the total population of the US. For many of these children, living in crisis translates into a severe disruption of their education.

In Syria, for instance, at least 6,000 schools have been destroyed, taken over by military operations or repurposed. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, seven million children are missing out on education. Less than 30% of girls are literate in Nepal, and only 38% of children go to school in Liberia. Official enrollment data is missing for most of the world.

I think you meant to post that one story down.

"Lost in the hullabaloo over Rachel Notley’s NDP snuffing out the 44-year Tory dynasty has been the magnitude of the fiscal squeeze now facing the province.

The collapse of crude oil prices that had former Progressive Conservative premier Jim Prentice warning Albertans to brace for a $7-billion hole in provincial revenues will result in his NDP successors tabling a budget Tuesday that forecasts the largest-ever deficit in the province’s history."

"
After ruling the roost since the 1970s, Alberta conservatives are quick to forget decades of right-wing economic policies that helped create a cycle of booms and busts that not only left Alberta vulnerable to changes in global oil prices, but left the province's finances in a mess, as well."

You've probably never heard of the Alberta Prayer.

"Dear God,

Please give us another oil boom.

We promise not to piss it away like last time.

Amen."

44 years of Con rule, Alberta Heritage Fund, $17.7 billion.

44 years of "dirty fucking hippie, commie, liberal, socialist rule" in Norway, Norway's Soverign Wealth Funds, $880 billion.

funny thing is, they both have roughly the same size of populations and roughly pump the same amount of oil.

Norway's Commies socked the money away for the future,

Alberta's Tories spent the money on a 44 year long binge on hookers, fast cars and blow.

Yep, and Norway still managed to provide health care, education and pensions to her citizens. She continually ranks in the top 20 countries in the world to live in.

I know,I know, they don't have Obamacare, the Death Star, Rona Harper, Sarah Palin Ace Geographer, or the Cookie Monster but they do the best they can.
