The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the Mediterranean late on Monday, the U.S. Navy said, at a time when U.S. officials are raising alarm over Russia's maritime expansion.

The Eisenhower, also known as the "Ike," will relieve the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group which later this month heads back to the United States after an extended eight-month deployment.

The Eisenhower, which also leads a strike group of cruisers, destroyers and warplanes, is scheduled to continue on to the Gulf to participate in U.S. air strikes on Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria. Exact details of its deployment have not been released.

Update: USS Dwight Eisenhower Strike Group Enters Mediterranean (Sputnik)

WNU Editor: The Pentagon's explanation for this deployment is that it is to add more firepower in the war against the Islamic State, and to respond to Russia's recent deployments .... with the USS Eisenhower's ultimate destination is the Arabian Sea/Persian Gulf. But I cannot help but feel that thee vessels are also being deployed because of Libya, and the possibility that Western forces may be deployed to assist the Libyan government in its ongoing war against the Islamic State.

The Libyans have been given a deadline to agree upon "their" new western mandated government (the MB dominated GNA). Past that, Libya will be deemed to have no legitimate government or sovereignty....as if that ever ment anything to the Exceptionalist Imperialists.

The Russians have said they will not sign off on another NATO intervention at the UNSC. I doubt the Chinese will either. The Russians appear to back (for now) the government headquartered in Tobruk and have even printed their currecy. Guess who says it's conterfeit.

Egypt supports the leader of Tobruk's military (the real Libyan armed forces) Haftar, while Turkey, Qatar and "the west" (as usual) support the MB. Meanwhile, no one really wants to talk about the still very active Green Resistance of Qaddafi supporters.

In short, his O'ness can move all the carriers around he wants. There are actors and factors in play which make Libya a bite more than NATO can chew.
