Sophia Yan, CNN: Why China wants U.S. military jet engines

China appears to be going to great lengths to get its hands on high-tech U.S. jet engines to beef up its military capabilities.

On Thursday, a woman named Wenxia Man was convicted in a Florida court of conspiring to evade U.S. export laws by illegally acquiring and sending fighter jet engines and drones to China, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Prosecutors said Man was working with an associate in China to buy and export engines made by Pratt & Whitney and General Electric (GE), which are found in a range of top U.S. military aircraft, including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the F-22 and the F-16 fighter jets. She was also found to have tried to export a General Atomics drone, and technical data for the different hardware items.

During the investigation, Man referred to her associate as a spy "who worked on behalf of the Chinese military to copy items obtained from other countries and stated that he was particularly interested in stealth technology," the Department of Justice said.

WNU Editor: China has always lagged behind in avionics and jet engines. It is nto a surprise that they are focusing their spying efforts on acquiring these technologies.

The way I see it...China never was or has been our "ally." Something needs to happen now before they gain a strategic upper hand.

I wouldn't say China is a third world country, I travelled through China for 3 weeks several years ago and it blew me away the modernisation that's going on there. Makes my country Australia look third world at times.

I've heard from Americans who have travelled through China as well and they say pretty much the same thing that my country and theirs is third world compared to China. In fact, I've heard from some who have been to your country and America is third world compared to Australia.

Most Americans understand that our infrastructure is crap and falling apart. Things don't work very well.

Right around the time that candidate Trump announced his candidacy for POTUS he conducted an interview where he described in detail the magnificence of Chinese building projects. He went on to suggest that currently we cannot come close to matching this because of the regulatory environment and our foreign commitments.

Since he's announced his candidacy he's gone on to point out that we cannot keep these foreign commitments and make the necessary investments at home to make our stuff work properly. Expanding upon this some military officials have asked recently do we want to keep a battalion in Poland or invest in a high speed rail?

Given that the battalion in Poland will do nothing to deter Russia but may only inflame the situation and currently Poland's interest and America's interests are misaligned this would seem a no brainer. Clearly it is experiential common sense that this "alliance" needs to be renegotiated. Failure to do this means we will be unable to address our needs and have our infrastructure continue to crumble.

Actually I could go on about the vast differences between US and Chinese infrastructure. Suffice it to say this is not a third world country or if it is the United States is even more a third world country than China is.
