ABC News Online: Chinese, Russian navies sail into contested Japanese East China Sea waters

China's Defence Ministry has said it is looking into reports one of its navy ships sailed close to disputed islands in the East China Sea, adding its navy had every right to operate in Chinese waters.

The Japanese Government said a Chinese naval ship sailed into waters surrounding the islands for the first time, prompting Tokyo to summon the Chinese ambassador in the middle of the night.

Russian naval ships were also seen in the area around the same time, according to local media.

"Around 00:50am (local time), a Chinese naval vessel entered our nation's contiguous waters surrounding the Senkaku Islands," the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
