RT: Moscow warns of response after US sends destroyer to Black Sea
American warships entering the Black Sea will prompt “response measures” from Moscow, a top Russian diplomat has warned, adding that another US aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean is clearly an attempt to show force ahead of an upcoming NATO summit.
The USS Porter (DDG-78), armed with assault cruise missiles and an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System (primary weapon: Standard Missile 3), entered the Black Sea this week.

Ha, the Russian Navy would not stand a chance against the US Navy. They just got their first ship in the Black Sea since the Cold War. That's like 1990. Russia is a regional power and would only stand a chance of keeping their navy if they stay close to home (ie missile range). Russia only has about 200 or so operational fighter/bomber aircraft and most are upgraded Cold War planes. They are a regional power and a paper tiger. The fact they have nuclear weapons is the only reason they haven't felt the US's backhand. Russia should stay swimming in the shallow end.
OV: Very respectfully you are not accounting for Russia's anti-ship weapons. Furthermore, there is no reason to give Russia a "back hand." This is a VERY TOUGH military force. While it may be possible to defeat them, it would be VERY difficult and they could/would hurt ANYONE who attempted to confront them VERY, VERY badly. As such, this is something that a smart nation would want to avoid if at all possible.
"The fact that they have nuclear weapons..." nuclear weapons and the ability to deliver them to the intended target are the most important weapons on the modern battlefield and we aren't even sure if ours are going to work should we need them as presidential candidate Donald Trump pointed out a few months ago. We need to do much upgrading to ours.
In the meantime, we need to find ways to work constructively with Russia. Excellent places to start would be 1.)changing course on Ukraine to support Russia's position. Doing so has huge upside potential along with no downside risk. 2.)Do all we can to oppose sanctions against Russia. While this would not change the position of the Western Europeans, this should, in time, lessen some of the enmity between us and them and has no downside along with much upside potential. 3.)Renegotiate the NATO alliance making it clear to Eastern European NATO members that we will NOT get pulled into a war with Russia due to their stupidity and arrogance. This "alliance" is among the single largest net drains on us and must be either discontinued or significantly renegotiated.
You probably arn't aware, but the Black Sea is Russia's front porch, and all of the Black Sea is in ASM range of Russia.
Not to mention their submarine fleet
