ABC News Online: South China Sea: China announces plans to hold joint naval drills with Russia

China and Russia will hold joint naval exercises in the South China Sea in September, Beijing's defence ministry says, after an international tribunal invalidated the Asian giant's extensive claims in the area.

The drills will be carried out in the "relevant sea and air of the South China Sea", defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told reporters at a monthly briefing, adding the exercise was "routine" and "does not target any third party".

Everyone should take note. As for the "notes" each individual country should be taking, this is something they each individually will need to decide. As for the United States, we should be watching and trying to learn. If you want to be the best, study the best. The two most powerful military forces on earth joining forces even if only temporarily, now that's a sight to behold!!

Is only the last of many messages the two send to NATO and U.S. allies. Not only in military matters.
And not only in Pacific front.

While I could be mistaken about the power structure, to say "nope not by a long shot" is very respectfully inaccurate. If nuclear capabilities, anti-ship capabilities, cyber warfare capabilities, and superior intelligence services, as well as a broad and deep network of agents operating in countries they have adversarial relations with are factored in Russia is at the very least equal to the United States and likely more powerful. At least this is how Us officials should approach this.

At the very least, Russia and China, especially Russia, can inflict VERY heavy damage on the United States. When engaging in policies that they could find provocative one should be very circumspect in such matters.

I don't know why the Chinese will need tugboats unless they serve a military purpose. Underestimating one's adversaries is very dangerous and can be fatal.
