Following this botched coup attempt, it would be foolishly premature for the rest of the world to breathe a sigh of relief.
For the relative calm that has settled on the streets of Turkey is likely to give way to a storm that heralds an even darker and more violent period for the country – and the wider region – both of which, of course, are already convulsed in unprecedented chaos and bloodshed.
A new wave of turmoil in Turkey is an especially sobering prospect, for the vast country of 75 million people – which borders Syria, Iraq and Iran – is in the crosshairs of the current wave of region-wide civil wars, sectarian strife and terrorism, and has given refuge to almost three million refugees.

WNU Editor: I am not sure about the Islamic State benefiting from the turmoil in Turkey .... the war will still go on, and their territory will continue to shrink. But is Putin the real winner in this crisis? At the moment .... as strange as it may seem .... Putin may be Erdogan's only "real friend" on the international scene .... Putin was after-all the only who called him during the coup to tell him that Russia will support him 100%. Hmmm .... both Assad of Syria and Erdogan of Turkey .... when in a jam the only who called them was Putin .... I see the potential of something bigger brewing here.

I read a story about Obama calling with support unlike other western leaders.
So Putin called before Obama did?
They did after the fact. But during the crisis it was Putin who called. President Obama' s first response was a White House statement 3 hours after the coup started.
Yep , this is a huge win for Putin . The complete deterioration of US Turkey relations is a real possibility here.
This really reminds of the burning of the Reichstag, Erdogan has benefited far greater than anyone , absolute power now.
