VOA: US to Send More Troops to Iraq to Help Shape Battle for Mosul
BAGHDAD—The U.S will send 560 more troops to Iraq to help shape the fight to retake the city of Mosul from Islamic State.
Secretary of Defense Ash Carter made the announcement Monday during visit Baghdad to discuss the next steps in the campaign with Iraqi leaders and his commander in the ground.
Iraq forces recently seized a major airbase near Mosul, marking the completion of the coalition’s “first 10 plays” toward defeating Islamic State, said a senior U.S. defense official. The Qayyarah Airbase West is located about 60 kilometers south of Mosul.
