Iran Threatened To Shoot Down Two U.S. Navy Spy Planes In The Persian Gulf Over The Weekend

FOX News: Iran threatened to shoot down US Navy spy planes in the Persian Gulf

Iran threatened to shoot down two US Navy surveillance aircraft flying close to Iranian territory in the Persian Gulf over the weekend, the latest in a series of recent provocations between Iran and the US military in the region, three US defense officials with knowledge of the incident told Fox News.

On Sept. 10, a Navy P-8 Poseidon with a crew of nine and an EP-3 Eries with a crew of roughly 24, were flying a reconnaissance mission 13 miles off the coast of Iran, in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, according to officials.

Iran’s territorial waters—like all nations--extend 12 miles into the sea, according to international maritime law.

At some point during the flight, the Iranian military warned the two aircraft to change course or risk getting shot down.

They had their bluff called, no big deal. They should have closed another half mile to the line.

Iran paid dearly to learn its lesson not to trust the USA. They are owed much more than the paltry sum paid to date.

No country likes it when a power they don't trust approaches their airspace. Even countries that don't really countrol their airspace, like Canada.

A few years back some Russian Bears approached "our" airspace in the north. The Teabag Party's Defence Minister, Peter Mackay, lept on the opportunity to loudly cough up empty rhetoric at the Russians from underneath Washington's skirt while rickety CF 18s were scrambled to intercept.

Canada takes its Artic sovereignty really really serious-like when the Russians show up (the Chinese are only cool if they bring bags of money and leave them here after encountering our multicultural racists). Other than that, it's pretty much an open relationship between "us" and sovereignty over the Arctic... and just about anything else.

At least the Iranians are consistent.

As for the cash,

It's Iran's money, much of which has been frozen since 1979.
