Defense News: Zumwalt Breaks Down, Gets Tow in Panama Canal
WASHINGTON -- The new, high-tech destroyer Zumwalt suffered an engineering casualty Monday evening while passing through the Panama Canal and had to be towed to a berth, the US Navy said.
The US 3rd Fleet in San Diego was able to provide only a few details late Monday evening, but early reports indicated the problems stemmed from an issue with heat exchangers in the ship’s integrated power plant, which provides electrical power to both the propulsion plant and sensors, weapons and ship’s services.
Third Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Ryan Perry issued a statement late Monday:

Gods of all stars! Is the american naval engineer gone? We used to be good at this stuff.
I never thought the Russian aircraft carrier was a joke. Given the tendency of US political leaders, military leaders, and pundits to overestimate American capabilities and to underestimate those of adversaries and potential adversaries that has happened over and over and over and again, the only safe conclusion is to increase the potential of the adversary by between 25-50% while lowering expectations by a similar amount and often times more for the American side and you begin to get a real approximation of how they really stack up.
Essentially Russia and China are the world's most powerful countries militarily and this cannot be changed within any reasonable timeframe. Everyone needs to remain calm, recognize reality, and act accordingly. Acting within the framework of reality good outcomes are possible. Denying reality can generally only end badly.
This current drive for total automation and collateral damage-free warfare is killing us. Too expensive, too complex and too fragile. And apparently not easily fixable. It virtually wipes out Damage Control. Which traditionally is a strong point of the US Navy.
Couldnt agree more.
The Zumwalt was designed and built around the concept of "concurrence", just like the F-35, the Ford, etc.
The base concept of "concurrence" is that vapourware and bleeding edge technologies could/can be the core of the design at the design stage in the theory, that given the long lead times of procurement and construction, they will be mature technologies at time of launch.
It's a stupid idea and always has been.

If I were them I'd ask AAA if a
membership could cover these "concurrent" lemons.
