Even if one "side" did not militarize space, the other "side" would. As such, all the United States and any other country with the capability can do is to try and follow suit. While Russia and China are busy militarizing space, talking heads in the United States and the "west" are breathlessly talking about how the United States should non militarize space. Meanwhile the United States has fallen behind Russia and China in this area and are falling further behind.
Additionally other powers such as North Korea are moving into space with such weapons. If Iran has not already launched space based weapons, expect them to do so soon. As such, if current trends continue, the United States will fall even further behind to the point that the gap will be insurmountable. Perhaps it is time talking head pundits and leaders stop breathlessly talking about how the United States should not militarize space and adjust to reality and begin more work in earnest on our own space based weapons programs.
Demoncat politicians have never taken ASAT programs of other countries seriously.
