America's willingness, patience, and even ability to allow others to continue feeding at its trough for their defense needs is wearing thin, is rapidly becoming exhausted, and is breeding much resentment among Americans. I'm pleased to see the Japanese are getting the message. Hopefully others will follow.
First Barack Obama goes to Hiroshima. while a formal apology was not given, this can be seen a s de facto apology. Then Shinzo Abe goes to Pearl Harbor. While a formal apology was not given here, this can be seen as a de facto apology. In other words, in substance, both nations have apologized for their actions against one another here.
While apologies from anyone for something that happened so long based upon the actions committed by people long dead based upon issues that are irrelevant today on behalf of nations that no longer exist today nor will they ever exist again should be unnecessary, some will not let it rest and insist on such things. Hopefully this will satisfy some.
Today's America is no the same country it was in the early 1940s. Japan is not the same country today as it was then either. Imperial Japan is NOT coming back. America of the WWII ear is NOR coming back either.
In between all of this, we have America returning some 10,000 acres to Okinawa and Japan increasing its defense spending for the last four years or so. Hopefully these are the steps toward getting American forces completely out of Japan and Japan operating completely on its own for its defense needs. Now this would be a HUGE step toward developing a strong friendship with Japan.
As stated, America's patience at having others feed at its trough for their defense needs is rapidly waning and is leading to deep resentment among the American people. Furthermore America's ability to this is severely limited right now. It seems Japan is getting this and that leaders of both countries are working constructively together to get this done. Hopefully this can be built upon and serve as a model for similar progress with other nations.
