DW: Chinese aircraft carrier sails out of Taiwan Strait
China and Taiwan have reported that China's Liaoning aircraft carrier sailed out of the Taiwan Strait. Its passage through the waters dividing the mainland from the island had raised tensions.
In a statement posted on the Chinese defense ministry's website, a spokesman for China's army said the Liaoning carrier group was "visiting the South China Sea to conduct cross-maritime region drills and tests, has passed through the Taiwan Strait and continues with its further duties."
Beijing also said that the carrier's passage through the strait fully compiled with international law.
Taiwanese news outlet Focus Taiwan also reported that the Liaoning completed its passage at 06:30 a.m. local time (2330 UTC).

Not sure what DJT can actually do if this is a "test." He engaged in some pretty tough rhetoric during the campaign. It's going to be kind of hard for him to back down and, if he does "do something" then we may be facing down not only China but Russia, North Korea, Iran, and there are countries in South and Central America who will likely make trouble for America as well should a hot conflict with China ensue. Essentially China has a network of alliances the United States cannot hope to match at this point in time.
It'd be problematic enough at this time for the United States military to defend the American mainland. As such, expecting it to defend Taiwan is pretty much not a realistic possibility. With regards to China the top priority for the deal maker and his team needs to be to renegotiate the trade current trade agreements. For better or worse, to get this done may well require some compromises that some may not like.
If the Chinese really are wanting to open up talks with team Trump, this may be a good first step. Mr. Trump gets to climb down from some of his campaign rhetoric, the Chinese get to look like reasonable adults, AND if we can achieve a more equitable trade agreement then this would be a good ending. I suppose as long as we get a reasonable trade agreement out of this the semantics of who is actually initiating the talks is really not that important.
Much like the current trade agreement with China is not sustainable the current defense agreements with nations like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, NATO as currently constituted, and a host of others are not sustainable are not sustainable as well and will need to be renegotiated. Surely everyone knew these things would not be sustainable and the day would come when they would have to be renegotiated or the United States would be sucked dry and ultimately die the way an animal does when a parasite consumes it. Surely they would not expect the United States to voluntarily die for them.
As such, they all had to know these things would eventually come to an end one way or another most likely through a renegotiation. If they didn't know this, as the saying goes, stupid can't be fixed. If it is a case of stupid, this is really not America's fault or problem.
When we get to the point of negotiations, American leaders need to insist that our people are treated with respect and decency. Without such proper respect fruitful negotiations aren't going to be possible.
