CNN: Trudeau takes thinly veiled swipe at Trump
Washington (CNN)Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn't mince words Thursday in discussing how he viewed his relationship with the United States in the age of Donald Trump, issuing sharp criticism of the President-elect, though he did not mention his name.
"Canadians expect their government to have a constructive working relationship with the incoming American administration, and that's exactly what we're going to do," Trudeau said during a town hall in Belleville, Ontario, in response to a question about how a Trump presidency will impact Canada's relationship with the United States.
But, he said, "there are things that we hold dear that the Americans haven't prioritized."
"And I'm never going to shy away from standing up for what I believe in -- whether it's proclaiming loudly to the world that I am a feminist, whether it's understanding that immigration is a source of strength for us and Muslim Canadians are an essential part of the success of our country today and into the future," he said as the audience applauded.

WNU Editor: The Prime Minister is currently crossing the country conducting town-halls .... and people are telling him that current Federal and Provincial policies are hurting them .... Trudeau gets emotional question about carbon tax's impact on families. So to divert attention why not take a swipe at the U.S. President-elect .... it is a sound bite that has an audience in Canada (the mass majority of Canadians do not support President-elect Trump). Unfortunately, it does not help Canadians who are hurting from high taxes on energy (the GF lives in Ontario and her electricity bill is $622/month), and it will certainly not help our relations with the incoming Trump administration who are already hinting at what they may do .... Canada could also face auto border tax, Trump spokesman suggests (CBC).

$622 a month!!!
A MONTH!?!... I'd pay around 900 euro, a YEAR, for eletricity.
Either she lives in a really big house, leaves all the lights on 24/7 or the US living accommodations are just wholly disproportionate to where I live.
D. Plowman. I live in Quebec (the province next door) .... my monthly bill is about $65CAD/month. My home is double the size, I have a freezer, two fridges, a few computers, TVs .... well .... you get the picture. I heat with oil, she heats with electricity .... but she rarely has it on (her heating is primarily from a pellet stove and a fireplace). As you can imagine .... the people in the province where she lives are becoming beyond furious. And if it was not for me .... there is no way she would able to afford what she has.
Roughly 1/3rd of the Ontario Hydro bills fund the closing of Nuclear Powerplants and the clean up of long shuttered Nuclear Power and Fuel sites.
About 1/4 of the Hydro bill funds the closure of dirty Coal Powerplants and their conversion in some cases to clean(er) Natural Gas.
About 1% funds Green Energy Initiatives and Energy Savings Programs.
Ontario Hydro customers are basically paying for 30 years worth of CCD and mismanagement at senior levels of Management, which is what happens when you hire most of your Senior Staff from the US.
BC Hydro charges $0.08.29 a kwh.
Ontario Hydro's "peak rate" is $0.18.45 per kwh.
WNU Editor,
She really needs to get going on PowerSmart.
Having built a "net zero" House, I get by on a 4 kwh solar array, and that includes the Cabinet Shop, ( another net zero).
When it's 0, the heat from the appliances, heat the house.
At -15, we build one fire a day in the soapstone stove.
-25, two fires a day, one in the morning, one in the evening.
In the Cabinet Shop, offcuts and a Russian Mass Heater keeps the whole thing cozy.
Jay .... I know she needs to upgrade her home. But she intends to sell the house in a year. We will be looking for a home after that .... and where that will be will be our journey of discovery (she prefers BC .... she lived in Vancouver when she was a teenager). I love the concept behind PowerSmart and other ways and means to save power/heat your home/etc.. My chalet in the Laurentians is built around some of these points. Insulation. Having the proper windows. etc.. Huge savings .... and the chalet is super comfortable even if it is -30C outside.
As for Ontario .... the GF's bill just does not make any sense .... and she is in the same boat as everyone else. Her bill was 120/month in 2004 .... now $622 .... and while she is super frugal when it comes to using electricity .... it is not helping. And what is really scaring everyone is that Hydro One has told everyone that their bills are going to go even higher in the next 2 to 3 years.
Not surprising .... the Ontario Liberals poll numbers are horrible right now, and it is because of this one issue that they are going to get obliterated when they go to the polls in 2018. The anger is deep .... very deep .... especially in the rural regions where people like the GF are stuck with an extra delivery charge for their electricity (she pays $184 for just that .... while everyone in my province of Quebec pays the same rate, no delivery charge, regardless of where you live). The problem may be 30 years old .... but it is the past few years where everything has fallen apart.
Profit's are corporatized, costs are socialized.
In BC you get $0.21 per kwh fed back into the grid from micro hydro, solar or wind.
Ontario, $0.08.14 per KWH, less than peak rates.
The Ontario Government "harvested" $118.2 billion from Ontario Hydro, in "surpluses", rather than using the money to retire debt or deal with liabilities. It's one of the many Conservative legacies in Ontario.
Even Klien's Alberta put more money in insulation than Harris's Ontario.
I did a job this year, in Sorrento, on a Hotel, where between all the subsidies and rebates, 95% of the costs were covered by energy efficiency programs. The place went from consuming 354 kwh a day and 1189 btu's, to consuming 38 kwh a day and 254 btu's.
Total cost, ( before rebates), $113,548 for 32 units.
The Manager e-mailed me after our Christmas Cold, ( -20+) to let me know that after rebates, the job had already broken even in costs.
You two need to hang it up for the winter and head to AZ with the rest of the snow birds...
Nope.
No. Mind you my brother loves Arizona. Specifically Tucson.
...Conversion to cleaner natural gas ...
Once again JabberJay contradicts himself.
Shocker!
The majority of Canadians and the majority of Americans have something in common, neither support Trump.
My sister used to live in Boulder, NV and paid nothing. Zero.
Jay. Ontario Premier Harris left office 15 years ago .... voters do not blame him for the mess that they are in right now.
More info on the GF's situation. She lives just outside of Alexandria .... her bill is $622/month. Her boss who lives within Alexandria is in a home that is double hers .... pays $244/month. That is what is making people upset. The mismanagement cannot be explained or defended .... this is a policy based on a political agenda pure and simple .... and people are waking up. Screw the rural vote .... but keep the urban vote on your side.
As to Ontario's plan and program to help people adopt green energy technologies .... solar/wind/etc. .... the GF looked into it last fall and found out from contractors that Hydro One has a refusal rate of 95% to hook themselves up to such a system. No press coverage yet on this story .... especially that 19 out of 20 rate. But no Hydro One certification means no insurance .... no insurance .... well .... you will have a problem with your mortgage (no insurance .... no mortgage). It looks like a classic case where Hydro One and the Provincial government say one thing .... the media covers it .... but on the ground the story is completely different.
I am not even going to talk about Hydro Quebec .... they want no one .... and I mean no one .... setting up a system that would provide electricity independent from them. If you set up solar panels .... it cannot be hooked to what they have in you home .... it has to be completely independent. Again .... no Hydro Quebec certification means insurance companies will not cover you. No insurance .... good luck on your mortgage. The press releases say one thing .... the reality on the ground is different.
A woman went off grid in Florida. The city council went after her. They may have had a point if it came to sewage. pother than that they had no point.
It has been about 2 years so I do not remember all the particulars.
Just about everyone or anyone in the U.S. would use a wood burning stove or pellets. If they had the wood.
Chances are that people to the south of Jay would not only tell them know, but Hell No and eventually arrest them if fines did not work.
These no fire codes are not only affect the cities but everyone in the affected counties even if they are in the mountains.

"Ontario Premier Harris left office 15 years ago .... voters do not blame him for the mess that they are in right now."
Most voters have short memories, when they remember anything at all.
Sadly Jay .... you are 100% right.
"Little Potato’s response to the grandmother who complained about energy poverty was to say that the federal carbon tax hasn’t even kicked in yet, so she can blame Kathleen the Great’s the provincial government for her predicament. Basically, he told her to get ready for an even bigger kick in the teeth when he gets done with her. Good retail politics, eh?
But Kathleen’s former behind-the-scenes green guru is now Little Potato’s puppet-master, so it is a distinction without a difference, really. Under the guidance of Gerald Butts, the Ontario government has made a complete hash of the energy market: our generating capacity is almost double the peak load requirements, but we keep buying more capacity and some of it is the most expensive
in the world. Then we sell the surplus at a loss to businesses in Michigan, Ohio, and NY,directly subsidizing the closest competitors to Ontario’s manufacturers…. You can’t make this stuff up."
