Washington Post: European leaders shocked as Trump slams NATO and E.U., raising fears of transatlantic split

BRUSSELS — European leaders said Monday that they may have to stand alone without the United States once Donald Trump comes to office, raising the prospect of an unprecedented breach in transatlantic relations following Trump’s comments that the European Union is bound for breakup and NATO is obsolete.

Trump said in a weekend interview with the Times of London and Germany’s Bild newspaper that the 28-nation European Union was a vehicle for German interests and said that he was indifferent to its fate. He also said he was committed to European defense even as he expressed skepticism about NATO’s current configuration.

Trump’s attitudes have raised alarm bells across Europe, which is facing a wave of elections this year in which anti-immigrant, Euroskeptic leaders could gain in power. Most mainstream leaders had committed to working with Trump after Jan. 20, even as they expressed hope that he would moderate his views once he took office. His continued hard line has created the grim realization in Europe that they may now have to stand alone, without their oldest, strongest partner.

WNU Editor: There are a number of important elections in Europe that will probably result in nationalist parties coming to power. The EU establishment are going to be more in shock with that than what President-elect Trump said this weekend.

Europe and the world has to get over the shock of WW2 and stand up on it's own two feet, the US has done a lot for the world since 1945 but it's all but broke, Trillions in Debt and it's infrastructure and cities are falling apart, they can't continue, they have their own problems to look after.

Easy enough to say that, yet what about all the times that America has interfered across the waters in the affairs of other countries? Irag? Libya? I dare say... Syria is a by-product of their conduct in Irag, something that Europe is continuing to bleed. America is not fully responsible, but partly.

It's easy now to turn around and try to wash ones hands from the affairs of europe after the mess they attributed too!

" I dare say... Syria is a by-product of their conduct in Irag"

First off, is Irag some country on Mars? I watched John Carter of Mars and I do not remember a land called Irag.

But seriously, there were no disgruntled Muslim Brotherhood and other people in Syria? It is all Bush's fault?

Hama uprising may refer to:
- 1925 Hama uprising, part of the Great Syrian Revolt
- 1964 Hama riot (1964 Hama uprising)
- April 1981 Hama massacre during the Islamic uprising in Syria
- Hama massacre 1982 during the Islamic uprising in Syria
- Siege of Hama (2011) during the 2011 Syrian uprising

I remember food prices spiking in 2011. Pain was felt in many places like Tunisia and Egypt. Personally, I don't believe it was Bush, but an evil plot by the sinister Obama. I do have proof that Obama is sinister.

Just like Obama said electricity prices were necessarily going to sky rocket. He skyrocketed grain prices too!

But seriously 2 generations of one party rule where a religious and ethnic minority took over the government and ran a police state, The Muslim Brotherhood always in the background, high food prices and you want to blame Bush?

I'll give you Libya. The petulant boy king, BamBam did that on the advice of the Samantha that Power (Miss R2P) and others. Bush Left Gadaffi alone after 2003. Gadaffi gave up his WMD programs and ceased terroristic activities against us. We no longer had an interest in Libya. BamBam smashed that agreement.

Iraq invaded Kuwait or did you forget that?
