The Guardian: 'Europe's fate is in our hands': Angela Merkel's defiant reply to Trump

Chancellor joined by French president in making curt comments about the US president-elect’s remarks about Germany, EU and Nato

Angela Merkel and François Hollande have responded curtly but defiantly after Donald Trump cast further doubt on his commitment to Nato and gave strong hints that he would not support EU cohesion once in office.

“We Europeans have our fate in our own hands,” the German chancellor said after the publication of the US president-elect’s interviews with the Times and German tabloid Bild. “He has presented his positions once more. They have been known for a while. My positions are also known.”

"Europe's fate is in our hands." Isn't this how it should be? Isn't this the case with nation states? If not for Europe, it is about time!!

NO ONE in the United States has EVER been under any delusion that except for perhaps the most token gestures designed for political theatre only that ANY of the\se "allies" would EVER lift a finger to help us should we need it. Unfortunately American leaders historically run after "western" European leaders hoping against hope that they will somehow, someday respect us and even like us kind of like a schoolgirl experiencing her first crush and the boy of her affections continues to treat her badly yet she still keeps coming back for much like the United States with this NATO "alliance."

The American people are becoming tired of abuse at the hands of these people. Then along comes Donald Trump essentially saying what most Americans have known for quite some time but have been afraid to say aloud.

Well, we could go back to the Am Rev and note the help. Or the involvement in our Civil War...and when I served early on in the Korean War there were many non-American forces along with us. But you have your bias and ignore facts.

Fred,

While each one of these could be studied in detail, with the possible exception of the American Revolution the other cases you mention are instances where Americans served as pawns to represent someone else's interests.

Wit that said what I was referring to is today's world and not the would of these past times that was/is very different from the world today. Today except in the most token gestures that are essentially meaningless no one is going to help us. Facts are not be ignored here. Instead they are being stated correctly.

Now getting off topic perhaps Mr. Trump may be pathologically insane. On the one hand, he wants to renegotiate the trade agreements that badly need to be renegotiated. On the other hand, he wants to poke fingers in China's eyes over Taiwan. It appears the Taiwanese may be manipulating us to serve as pawns in their power struggle with China. In order to get these agreements renegotiated, concessions will likely have to be made with regards to Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Additionally he proposes a nuclear weapons reduction agreement with Russia in order to lift sanctions. As the editor pointed out elsewhere sanctions are "breaking" and will be de facto gone, if not formally gone, in a year or less. It makes no sense to compromise our nuclear deterent in exchange for lifting sanctions that are soon to be gone anyway. Also, how would we ensure Russian compliance with any arrangement? As such, it seems nuts to even suggest such an approach.

With that said he is correct on the obsolescence of NATO and the need to improve relations with Russia. As has been said broken clocks are right twice a day.

B Poster, if you are going to pile your garbage like you usually do, at least have utmost respect for those that have done more than sat behind a computer screen. Mr Lapides obviously has been in the real world where things happen, you have not. Don't have one of your "debates" with him.

Britain was involved in the Civil War. They were hovering waiting to pick up the pieces.

King Louis of France, who believed in the divine right of kings, wanted to pay England back for the French and Indian War.

Spain likewise had reason to fight Britain. Some of those reasons would be Jamaica and Pensacola.

General von Steuben had been cashiered in Prussia.

Pulaski, a hero, came because Europe had partitioned his homeland 3 times.

Soft Brexit, exit stage right, Hard Brexit, front and center.

Looks like pretty soon it will be England, all alone. Back to 1707 and 1801.
