How Will U.S. - Mexico Ties Be Impacted By A Trump Administration

Donald Trump had this message for the car industry earlier this week

BBC: Mexico and Mr Trump: What will happen to trade ties?

Mexico is being blamed by President-elect Donald Trump for taking jobs from the US.

He's been putting pressure on US companies not to move jobs south, and this week Ford announced it was investing in its factory in Michigan rather than building a new plant in Mexico.

During his election campaign, Mr Trump threatened to rip up Nafta, the free trade agreement between Canada, the US and Mexico, which has been in place for 23 years.

But what impact has Nafta had in Mexico, and what would its potential demise mean for the country?

WNU Editor: The advantages for a company to invest in Mexico rather than in the U.S. or Canada are numerous. Lower wages. You are not responsible to pay for the health care of your workers. Environmental and other regulations are minimal if non-existent. A different tax structure. NAFTA was suppose to bring Mexico to the same social and economic living standards of the U.S. and Canada .... but after 30 years it has not happened to the level that many had predicted and expected. My prediction .... a re-evaluation of this trade deal is long overdue .... and when it happens (and it will happen) .... Mexico will quickly find out that they do not have the leverage that they believe that they have .... Mexico spooked by Trump's leverage in keeping jobs in the US after Ford's pivot (AP). In regards to immigration .... here are my predictions. Some parts of the wall are going to be built. Illegal immigrants in the U.S. who have committed crimes will be deported (whether they are Mexican or from any other country). People who have crossed the border and who are apprehended will be detained and brought back to the border and kicked out. And for those who have resided illegally in the U.S. for years .... they better take the time and energy to focus on doing what legal immigrants have been doing for years if they want to become a U.S. citizen .... there is a process to become a legal citizen .... my advice is to take it even if it may mean a few years of hardship because lets face it .... the benefits of being legal will far outweigh the negatives if you are forcibly brought back to the country from where you came from. As for those who believe that they may get amnesty and/or a "free ride" to a legal status in the future .... forget about that  .... even though there are many in Washington who are still pushing that idea.
