Is President-Elect Trump And The U.S. Intelligence Community Headed For A Showdown?

NPR: Are Trump And U.S. Intelligence Community Headed For A Showdown?

There's a new narrative solidifying in Washington: President-elect Donald Trump distrusts the U.S. intelligence community because it's been sounding the alarm on Russia's interference in the November election. In turn, this feeds a growing sense of dread among U.S. intelligence professionals that the President-elect and his inner circle will ignore or undermine the intelligence community at every opportunity.

The intelligence community certainly has reason to be concerned. Trump's goal to slash and restructure the CIA and Office of the Director of National Intelligence was reported by the Wall Street Journal Wednesday, the same day the president-elect raised doubts about U.S. intelligence in a tweet citing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

WNU Editor: The Trump transition team is denying reports that they have plans to overhaul the U.S. intel community .... Donald Trump Has No Plans to Shake Up U.S. Spy Agencies, Spokesman Says (Fortune). President-elect Trump himself is criticising the media coverage of this story .... Trump: Media is wrong — I'm a 'big fan' of U.S. intel (Politico). As to the media narrative that President-Elect Trump and the U.S. intelligence community are headed for a showdown .... my take of it is a big "NO". President-elect Trump is going to be President in 16 days .... and whether the intel community likes it or not .... he is going to be the boss at the time. In short .... if anyone wants a showdown .... they will probably be replaced.

Update #2: My guess is that many within the intel community are worried that with all the talk of re-organising the intelligence community, President-elect Trump will do what CIA Director Mansfield did when he was appointed to the post by then President Carter .... in 1979 he fired over 800 CIA operational positions in what has become known in the CIA as the Halloween Massacre.
