DW: Russia, UK trade barbs as aircraft carrier Kuznetsov sails home

Moscow has accused London of staging a "show" by escorting a Russian aircraft carrier through the English Channel and criticizing Russia. Earlier, the UK defense secretary called the Admiral Kuznetsov a "ship of shame."

Russian warships "had no need" for a British military escort, as they know "how to hold course and navigate" on their own, Moscow's defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Thursday.

The UK had deployed a Royal Navy frigate and Typhoon jets to monitor a convoy of Russian vessels passing through the English Channel. The convoy, led by the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, is on its way back home from their mission in Syria.
