According to Rowden, a US destroyer will "rock anything it comes up against." Pictured here is the USS Lassen in the South China Sea. US Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Huey D. Younger Jr.
Business Insider: Commander of US Naval forces implies that Chinese navy ships can't 'fight their way out of a wet paper bag'
In a brief but illuminating interview, US Navy Vice Admiral Tom Rowden, the commander of the US Navy's Surface forces, told Defense News' Christopher P. Cavas a key difference between the ships of the US and Chinese navies.
Cavas asked Rowden about China commissioning a 4,000 ton frigate and deploying it just six weeks later, a start-to-finish speed inconceivable in the US Navy, where ships undergo many rounds of testing and often take more than one year to deploy.
When asked about the differences between the US and China's processes, Rowden explained that while a US and a Chinese ship may both appear combat-ready,"[o]ne of them couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag and the other one will rock anything that it comes up against."

WNU Editor: Why does this remind me of the Greek saying .... "hubris goeth before a fall"?

WNU Editor,
Your editor comment sums up my position entirely. Upon reading this statement, my first thought (especially when thinking about the Trump Administration) is to "fire this man IMMEDIATELY!!"
I recall a couple of similar incidents. 1.)When the admiral in charge of Middle East operations a few years ago received news that Iran can sink a US aircraft carrier, his response was to scoff at the idea and state something to the effect that he had seen intelligence reports on Iran. A better and more realistic response would have been to state something to the effect that "we are aware of Iranian capabilities and have taken the appropriate countermeasures." Whether or not appropriate countermeasures had in fact been taken may or may not have been true but at least the admiral would have been acknowledging that Iran can sink a US aircraft carrier. Instead we got a hubristic denial of reality. 2.)During the first term of George W. Bush a military commander in South Korea was asked what the US response would be in the event of a North Korean invasion of South Korea. The man's response was something to the effect of "oh they wouldn't do that they'd be destroyed." There may or not be a plan for such a contingency. The gentleman could have made up something on what a plan would be instead we go a hubristic dismissal of the fact that North Korea may invade South Korea. Frankly, in this case, this is or should be primarily a South Korean problem not an American one. Even still, such reckless nonsense o the part of an allied military commander cannot help their confidence in us or the US military.
I strongly suspect under a Trump Administration most of the people in leadership positions in the military and intelligence as well a significant number of rank and file intelligence personnel are going to need to be purged. As such, I have some modicum of hope that problems such as this can be resolved.
Yep, those pesky v.c we gonna bomb them into the stoneage.
whose going to bomb anyone into the stone age? Some learn nothing. We do NOT need a repeat of Vietnam. It may well be because some cannot learn that we have the current messes of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and so on.
We could have bombed into the stone age.
Constraints were put on the prosecution of the war that were not in place in WW2.
