North Carolina State University Professor Afsaneh Rabiei led the team that created the amazing foam.
This is not ordinary foam like the kind used for shaving, for example. This is a special type of foam called composite metal foams, or CMF.

I wonder how this will do against RPG's, a Carl G or a TOW if it used in building or retro fitting Tanks and other AFV's, my mind is exploding with all the possibilities.
Ar500 plate steel will also "pulverize" bullets. You have to be careful with this for personnel body armor, as that spalling created by destroying the bullet is still very dangerous and can go into neck, eyes, arms, legs, etc. But still, a lighter weight version, though bulkier, of ar500 is a nice option to have. Not sure if it will really be lighter though as it sounds like it has to be pretty thick. For people atleast I think something like an UHMWPE would be nice.
