Should The U.S. Ignore That Russian Spy Ship Off Its Coast?

NBC: Ignore That Spy Ship Off the Coast. The Russians Aren’t Coming

Russia remains a threatening adversary of the U.S., but the country's recent aggressive military actions aren't signs of an imminent conflict, U.S. officials told NBC News

Traditional media and social media have been atwitter with reports of a Russian spy ship off Connecticut, the "buzzing" of a U.S. ship by Russian fighters and reports of new cruise missile deployments by Russia.

But U.S. military and intelligence officials said concerns about these incidents are, in the words of one, "highly overstated."

"There are many facets to U.S.-Russian relations - and to Russia's aggressive behavior - but on the military front, they are on the defensive almost everywhere," a senior intelligence officer told NBC News. "Putin is indeed a menace to his neighbors, but outside Crimea and Ukraine, Russia is contained and playing catch-up."

Editor,

Your comment is spot on. I've known about this for a long time. Three basic thoughts come to mind. 1.)The media hysteria over this is absolutely hilarious. They've ignored this sort of thing forever. Now they get worked into a frenzy over something they've ignored forever. Could they only be now raising the alarm because they don't like POTUS? I think that is it. Unfortunately in the process they've taken something that is routine that could have been settled through a diplomatic process, blown it clear out of proportion, and needlessly further inflamed tensions in Cold War II. 2.) If this sort of thing is a grave problem for our national security, the media is either only just now catching on or they are only now raising the alarm about this for sheer political grandstanding. In they are only just now catching on, they are extreme idiots and should not be trusted. If this is sheer political grandstanding, they are not to be trusted either. As such, either way the media has no credibility. Additionally, given the tendency of US officials to understate foreign threats and overstate our own capabilities to deal with them, the statements by military officials that this is not a serious problem provides no comfort. 3.)A number of articles have been written about US involvement near Russia. I suspect the US is doing similar things off the coast of Russia. Prior to the rise of DJT, if my only source was the mainstream media, I would have thought the US was the only country to engage in spying activities.

To put things in perspective: The Viktor Leonov is not armed. US destroyers that sail in the Baltic and Black Seas are carrying Tomahawk missiles within range of Moscow. Who should be more worried?

If that rig was 30 miles off the coast of San Diego I'd take the boat out in heartbeat and go make a youtube video of it.
