RT: Trump expects Russia to ‘return Crimea' – White House
US President Donald Trump has been tough on Russia and expects Moscow to “return” the Crimea peninsula to Ukraine, the White House spokesman told reporters.
Addressing the resignation of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn – hounded by the media over his contacts with Russian diplomats prior to Trump’s inauguration – Spicer pointed out that Russia “seized” Crimea under the Obama administration and that the Trump-appointed ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has “strongly denounced the Russian occupation.”
"President Trump has made it very clear that he expects the Russian government to de-escalate violence in the Ukraine and return Crimea," Spicer said at the daily news briefing on Tuesday. “At the same time, he fully expects to – and wants to – get along with Russia."

Russia is not going to return Crimea, Crimea does not want to go back to Ukraine, and even if it did Russia would not allow it at least not without a fight. It seems to me that Ukraine and it's power struggle with Russia over who is going to control Ukraine is not worth escalation Cold War 2.
I had hoped that saner policies on the US side at least would prevail. Apparently this has not happened yet.
I meant who gets to control Crimea.
More likely that they will just take Ukraine too.

Cray-cray.
Requiring Russia to "return" Crimea and good relations with Russia are inconsistent on their face. Perhaps a deal can be worked out.
Sanctions against Russia get fully lifted, Crimea gets "returned" to Ukraine but Russia gets to install a puppet government in Ukraine so in effect Crimea remains Russian, and an undisclosed amount of US tax dollars or other worthwhile consideration they might consider worthehile gets transferred to Russia as compensation for the harm the sanctions caused them. Furthermore it is made clear to Ukraine that America considers the conflict "settled" and to expect no future support from America.
Everybody gets sonething here, America gets to save face, Russia gets sanctions lifted, Russia gets to have its interestes in Crinea secured, and most importantly we get to take a big step toward ending Cold War 2. Is Mr. Trump smart enough to persue such a policy? Would Mr. Putin be willing? As for Mr. Trump, current evidence would seem to indicate he isn't. As for Mr. Putin, he's been humiliating US leaders for quite awhile now. As such, I see no real reason for him to change course now.
Hopefully I'm wrong on both counts. What does serm clear is Russia is not going to strive with the United States forever. Continue to try and undermine them and eventually they will do something far worse to us than merely humiliate US leaders.
Even if Mr. Trump persued such a policy, will certain crazed people in the US government and even people allowed on his team allow it? Such people would need to be purged.
