Reuters: Venezuela opposition parties fear election ban as Socialists dig in
Venezuela's government is pushing forward with measures that could exclude some opposition political parties from future elections, potentially paving the way for the ruling Socialists to remain in power despite widespread anger over the country's collapsing economy.
The Supreme Court, loyal to socialist president Nicolas Maduro, has ordered the main opposition parties to "renew" themselves through petition drives whose conditions are so strict that party leaders and even an election official described them as impossible to meet.
Socialist Party officials scoff at the complaints. They say anti-Maduro candidates would be able to run under the opposition's Democratic Unity coalition, which has been exempted from the signature drives, even if the main opposition parties are ultimately barred.

I have a better idea. Why doesn't the current ruling party ban itself from future elections?
"The fix is in." I suppose it all depends upon the direction the military and police forces take that will determine whether or not the fix works. In any event, the current rulers appear to have dug a very deep hole for the country. When in a hole, the best thing to do is to STOP DIGGING!! Unfortunately, as is often the case with human nature, when humans find themselves in a hole the tendency is to not only continue the policies that led to the calamity in the first place but to double down on them!!
I wouldn't expect that government to change no matter how bad things may become for the ordinary Venezuelan. This is for two basic reasons. 1.) Things are likely still quite good for the elites which would include the government officials. 2.)Human nature often makes it difficult to admit a policy we have engaged in is a failure. The thinking is often along the lines of "if only I work at this awhile longer it will succeed." This is likely how they will think and the only way to get them to alter course will be if the military and police forces don't back them, an outside force intervenes, or the country runs out of resources for the elites to plunder.
I bet Young Communist is so "house proud"
