President talks of ‘great chemistry’ with China’s president in Journal interview

President Donald Trump was expansive on Wednesday about his relationship with a world leader he has gotten to know since taking office.

“We have a very good relationship,” he said in a Wall Street Journal interview in the Oval Office. “We have a great chemistry together. We like each other. I like him a lot. I think his wife is terrific.”

The leader who came in for those warm words? Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It’s safe to say very few people saw that coming. China was, as much as any country, the target of Trump broadsides during the 2016 presidential campaign—for not playing fair in the world economy, for taking advantage of the U.S., for stealing American business, for intimidating its neighbors.

Meeting face-to-face with one leader from another country tends to change the perspective of politics and relations between the participants. It's always good to 'Jaw-Jaw' on a personal level rather than engage in diplomacy through intermediaries, advisors and phone calls.

Although I get the impression we will only know the true results of that meeting in the very near future - the media are hyping it up, and really its far too early to say just how beneficial that meeting was.

It's just a shame that due to McCarthyism politics, Trump is not willing to put himself out and arrange a meeting with Putin... If there was ever a time to have such a meeting, now's that time.

If I was Trump, I'd go ahead and make that my priority, especially now - critics be damned.

Trump negotiates and strategizes on the fly brilliantly. What better way to force Putin's hand than becoming best buddies with Xi.

jb,
"What better way to force Putin's hand than becoming best buddies with Xi." Yeah, but also pressure both of them.

Plowman,
I think you're right, but I have no idea of all that's involved right now and what is his (Trump's) ultimate end point. I will say it is somewhat refreshing that the US strategy is not being blabbed about by people who should know better days ahead of even it's implementation.
