Daily Mail: Navy destroyer in standoff with an Iran 'attack' boat in the Persian Gulf: US warship fires a warning flare after it was 'provoked' by the Revolutionary Guard's vessel
* The USS Mahan is currently stationed near Iran in the Persian Gulf
* US officials said the ship had to take evasive action during the incident Monday
* An Iranian 'fast attack craft' approached it and got as close as 1,000 yards
* No warning shots were fired, but the Mahan did man its guns and sound an alarm
* The incident is the latest between the Navy and Iranian ships in recent months
A US warship has been forced to change course and fire warning flares by an Iranian attack boat that raced towards it with its weapons manned.
The USS Mahan had to take evasive action as the Iranian fast attack craft approached it in the Persian Gulf on Monday.
Fox News reports the foreign vessel did not come any closer than 1,000 yards, however that was still enough for those aboard the American destroyer to sound a warning signal and man its own weapons.
A navy official confirmed the incident to the network, and described it as an act of provocation.

Well perhaps the first fruits of the Iranian MOD talks with the Russians in Moscow. Reputedly Moscow has pulled half of it's Syrian air contingent.
Where is Capt. William C. Rogers III when we need him? He would have mistaken it for an approaching cruise ship and blasted it to all hell.
Anon is quite the radar operator.
"A subsequent US report by Rear Admiral William Fogarty, titled Formal Investigation into the Circumstances Surrounding the Downing of Iran Air Flight 655 on July 3, 1988,[8] noted that Captain Rogers received some faulty information that he used to make the decision to fire. Specifically, he was told the aircraft was identified as an Iranian Air Force F-14 Tomcat descending in an attack profile, and that it was identifying itself with secondary surveillance radar / IFF mode-II codes exclusively used by military aircraft. The investigation noted that Rogers was focused on the ongoing surface engagement and was only aware of the inbound aircraft for less than four minutes. It also pointed out that Rogers thought that he had increased burden to act since he was also assigned to protect the frigate USS Elmer Montgomery (FF-1082). The investigation also concluded that Rogers acted in a prudent manner based on the information available to him, and the short time frame involved. He also acted within the prescribed rules of engagement for USN warship captains in that situation"
Anon did you bomb Mrs Roger's minivan?
Anon,
Russia blew KAL 007 out of the sky and they were not in combat like the Vincennes.
Righhhhht... combat! Rogers was a competent commander controlling a state of the art combat system with the utmost skill. Except the system default setting was to overload the dipshit CIC and let the electrons take over because modern warfare is complex so idiots like the soon-be-given-a-medal Rogers can retire to a life of comfort knowing they murdered a couple hundred slobs.

Anon,
You have never sailed on an unarmed merchant, have you, you bitch.
"Gunboats of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, based on the islands of Hengam and Abu Musa, had been attacking tankers and merchantmen "
BTW I found the excerpt from a Newsweek article in the sports section. No wonder Newsweek was sold for 1 dollar.
So you have these zealots, these true believers and they are shooting up merchant men. Nice, Very Nice.
I loved it when the Chinese shot the pirates of the South Sea in the head at a soccer stadium with AK47s. That really was nice.
I love it when Somali pirates get shot up too.
Ditto Iranians. They were not pilots, but they were a hazard to safe passage.
Now Anon, One cruiser would have a hard time with several Boghammers. If the 5 inch gun cannot take them out, then the odds are equal or perhaps in the Iranians favor. If the 5 inch gun does not work to take out such a small target, then they are down to 50 cals, which is about what the Iranians had.
Between the Iranians laying mines, Iran Ajr, the Iranians in their Swedish boghammera (Thanks peaceniks, but then Sweden sold iron ore to Hitler), an Exocets from Iraqi planes, the Persian Gulf was not a safe place at the time.
But I know your style Anon. you are a warrior. You probably join large crowds and beat unarmed people, That would be your speed.
correction
pirates not pilots
