Thousands of residents have fled the southern Philippine city of Marawi as government troops exchanged gunfire with Islamist insurgents.
Army tanks packed with soldiers rolled into Marawi on Thursday in an effort to repel Islamist insurgents linked to Islamic State (IS), who had torched buildings, seized more than a dozen Catholic hostages and raised the black flag of IS.
