Citing New U.S. Sanctions Moscow Cancels Meeting With U.S. Diplomats

RT: Moscow cancels meeting with top US diplomat over new sanctions batch

Russia has condemned the new round of US sanctions as a “continuation of the trend set by the Obama administration aimed at ruining relations between our countries” and has promptly canceled a scheduled meeting of senior Russian and American diplomats.

The US Treasury expanded the sanction list on Tuesday, adding 38 individuals and organizations over alleged Russian involvement in the Ukrainian crisis.

Russia vowed to undertake “practical retaliatory measures” over the sanctions and canceled a scheduled meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and US Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon.

WNU Editor: This cancellation is "small potatoes" to what can (and probably will) happen next if trends continue. When you have a crisis in diplomacy .... the end result is always an increase in global tensions and conflicts .... and no common ground to find a consensus to solve them. Ukraine, North Korea, Afghanistan, the Middle East .... these are some of the regional conflicts where Russian involvement is essential to find solutions to very difficult problems. Sanctioning Russian officials at this moment in time is only going to result in blow-back to U.S. efforts .... both on the diplomatic level and more importantly on the ground.

Editor,

I actually could not have expressed it any better than your editor comment. Sanctioning Russian officials is a terrible idea. It was from the start. Not only should sanctions not be expanded but the ones currently in place should be lifted.

They never should have been imposed in the first place. Lifting them is going to be a neccessary condition to even begin negotiations. I would add that Russian assistance is not only necessary to solve the problems you mention but is going to ve neccessary for dealing with Iran.

Additionally sanctions against Russia undermine the role of the US dollar as world reserve currency hastening its end in this role and all but ensuring a "hard landing" when it does hapoen. The loss of the US dollar as world reserve currency cannot be prevented. As such, the goal needs to be a "soft landing." Sanctions against Russia were/are a terrible idea. This has all been further propagated by a myth of Russian intereference in the US election by petty losers further inflaming tensions.

Candidate Trump had this exactly right when he pointed out we needed to improve relations with Russia. To this end, he selected team members who had/have good relations with Russian leaders whom they trust. These People could have had a big roke in negotiating an end to Cold War 2. Unfortunately with a few exceptions those peolle aren't there now and POTUS does not seem to be getting sound advice.

Unfortunately relations with Russia are in tatters. Can DJT be a statesman and return to the positions expressed by candidate Trump? I pray he can. Part of character is doing that which is right in difficult situations. While POTUS cannot end sanctions on his own, he does need to make it clear at every opportunity the neccessity of doing this.
